This is a narrative about a competitive Latin dance team from Albert Einstein High School in Kensington, MD. I followed the team for the month leading up to its major competition in November at Strathmore. The story shows how Latin dance builds community and shapes identity for a new generation of young immigrants. Published in Bethesda Magazine/March-April 2014.
Senior Village Movement
“Senior villages” are grassroots neighborhood networks where volunteers help seniors age in their own homes. Beyond assisting the with doctor’s visits and errands, senior villages aim to combat social isolation and depression among the elderly. My story in Bethesda Magazine/May-June 2013.
iRest: Mindfulness and the Military
iRest is the military’s re-branding of yoga nidra, an ancient form of mindfulness meditation, aimed at helping veterans deal with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I profiled Iraq War veteran Ben King’s attempts to control his angry outbursts and insomnia through iRest for Bethesda Magazine/March-April 2013.
